Beyond 2.0, Tomorrow's Web and Mobile Multimedia Applications and Supporting Technologies for a Better Digital Citizenship

Abstract

 Advances in interaction and communication technologies have opened wide horizons for new computing paradigms  like pervasive and mobile computing, social networks, semantic Web and Web Intelligence which clearly showed a  trend of using computing and communication power to overcome the physical limitations inherited from desktop computers.  Technologies like wireless networks, ambient intelligence, mobile agents, miniaturized computing devices, embedded systems,  etc., have enabled a plethora of new types of applications and services. However, usage statistics showed that there is still a  huge gap between the potential of such services and their acceptance in practice. In this talk, we will explain and highlight  the factors, trends, and issues on how to deploy and utilize mobile multimedia for the design, development and deployment of  a content rich, user and business friendly, integrated network of autonomous, mobile agents. One of the major questions to be  answered is how to enable the human users to cope with this omnipresence of information. We already observe in the "traditional"  Web, how people are suffering from information overflow, receiving too much, the wrong, or even unwanted information.  Personalization and adaptivity appear to be potential solutions to this problem but bear the risk of putting the user out of control.  Approaches trying to overcome this conflict will be the focus of the presentation.  

Biography

Ismail Khalil Ibrahim is a senior researcher and lecturer at the institute of telecooperation at Johanes Kepler University Linz, Austria.  He is the president of the international organization of Information Integration and Web-based Applications & Services @WAS (www.iiwas.org)  and the editor of the handbook of research on Mobile Multimedia published by Idea group, USA and the book Mobile Multimedia: Communication  Engineering Perspective. He currently teaches, consults, and conducts research in Mobile Multimedia, Supply Chain Management, Agent Technologies,  and the Semantic Web and is also interested in the broader business, social, and policy implications associated with the emerging information technologies.  Before joining Johannes Kepler University of Linz in October 2002, he was a research fellow at the Intelligent Systems Group at Utrecht University,  Netherlands from 2001-2002 and the project manager of AgenCom project at the Software Competence Center Hagenberg - Austria from 2000-2001.  He worked in the University of Technology - Baghdad Iraq as lecturer from 1985-1990, in the Human Resources Training and Development Institute -  Iraq as the head of the academic studies department from 1990-1996, in Gadjah Mada University - Indonesia as teaching and research assistant from  1996-2000. His main scientific interests lay in the fields of E-commerce, Mobile Multimedia Applications and Services, Database Applications and Techniques  for the Web, Practical Experiences and Applications in Information Integration Systems, Agents for Information Retrieval and Knowledge Discovery, XML and  Semi-structured Data Management, Information Systems Management and Development, Information Technology: Impact, Economic Analysis. Dr. Ibrahim has authored  around 100 scientific publications, books, and book chapters. He serves as the editor-in-chief of the International Journal on Web Information Systems (IJWIS), Journal of Mobile Multimedia (JMM), International Journal of Mobile Computing and Multimedia Communication (IJMcMc), Advances in Next Generation Mobile Multimedia book series. Ambient and Pervasive Intelligence book series, editorial board of several journals, including the Columbian Journal of Computing, Radiomatics: journal on Communication Engineering, Business Process Management Journal (BPMJ), The International Journal of Information Technology and Web Engineering and International Journal of Business Data Communications and Networking.  , Journal of Ubiquitous Computing and Intelligence (JUCI), International Journal of Wireless and Mobile Computing (IJWMC), International Review on Computers  and Software (IRECOS), International Journal of Computational Intelligence Systems (IJCIS), and International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous  Engineering (IJMUE). His work has been published and presented at various conferences. He is also a reviewer for several conferences and journals.

 

Dr. Patrício Serendero

Ambient Intelligent (AmI) in 2008

Abstract

This talk will review the current situation in the area of Ambient Intelligent, an encounter of several disciplines receiving much attention from the business and scientific fields.  In the European case, a policy definition in 1990 launched official research in this area, based on a futuristic scenario for 2010. From that time till now, it has been technology developments in various areas such as mobile technology, web services, natural human-computer interfaces, computer technology, system architectures and artificial intelligence among other. A first conclusion, this review brings us to the conclusion that AmI is no longer a promise for the future but to a great extent a reality right now. The talk will review some of these ongoing developments pointing out remaining challenges and open issues. Emphasis will be around the concept of context, a key element on user-environment interactions which is at the centre of this technology.   AmI must be context-aware. We will take a look to some aspects in Context-awareness, i.e, computers sensing and reacting intelligently based on input from its environment; context-aware computing: providing services or behaviour adapted to a given context and context-aware modelling taking a look to the middleware construction as the fundamental block for interconnectivity. As a key element from the perspective of human-computer interactions and system architecture, a central question is how users perceived and require contextual information. So answering the question on how context can be represented is crucial for the development of intelligent systems. Some architecture model proposals are review. As it happens always with new and profound technological changes as this one, ethical concerns are equally important for these developments to be considered a truly advance to the human society. Clashing needs for information mixed with security as well as privacy issues and human liberties creates a new demand for appropriate regulations. Attendants participation will be much appreciated at this point.

Biography

Dr. Serendero got his Bs. in Forestry Engineering in Chile in 1970. Moved to Canada he obtained his degree in Computer Science at McGill University (Montreal) in 1985.  In Canada he worked over 15 years in the private sector on the computer science field, the last ten of which as System Analyst. Moved to Europe during the nineties he joined the University of Algarve in southern Portugal where he resides now. In 2004 he got is his PhD in the area of Data Mining , Information Systems (cum laude) at the University of Seville, Spain under the supervision of Prof. Miguel Toro Bonilla. At present time Dr. Serendero holds a position as Auxiliary Professor a the Engineering Electronics and Informatics Department at  the University of Algarve where he is responsible for the System Analysis and Data Mining courses. Its scientific interest and technical contribution is on the area of Data Mining, Machine Learning and Architecture User Models in intelligent environments. Dr. Serendero is member of the Ilab, the Informatics Lab at the University of Algarve. He is also member of CIMA, the Research Centre for Marine and Environment of the same university.

If necessary, please update keywords, abstract, and title using the Edit submission. This also should be done until Camera-Ready paper deadline: July 8th, 2008.
 
3.      Upload Camera-Ready Paper until July 8th, 2008. For that, use Re-upload a paper. To prepare Camera-Ready Paper, follow reviewers' comments sent to you by e-mail and make sure you meet Guidelines to submit your wok.
 
4.      Register your paper until the Late Registration Deadline on August 8th, 2008. You can make registration by Bank Transfer or Credit Card. All Credit Card payments will be received by PayPal with an administration tax of 6.4%. If you live in Brazil, Bank Transfer is preferred because has no charge. If you live outside Brazil, you have to pay all bank transfer costs. Conference registrations may be done through Registration Form.
 
5.      Pay attention in the lists of full and short paper sent to you by e-mail, and also published in the Publications Menu at left side of the conference website. Some works was sent as full-papers, but approved as short papers. So, they have to be reduced to 4 or 3 pages. If you were approved as SHORT PAPER, also you have to prepare a poster with dimensions 120cm (height) x 84cm (width). Short papers will be presented in a Panel Session during the conference. We strongly suggest posters and presentations be wrote in English. Full papers will be presented only in English in the proper technical sessions.
